U.S. Gemstone Statistics: 2026

Key figures on gemstone supply, trade, production, and diamond imports, gathered in one place for easy reference.

Last updated August 18, 2026. Statistics reflect 2025 estimates unless noted.

At a glance

A useful snapshot of the gemstone market.

Gemstones travel through a global chain of mining, cutting, trading, design, and retail. These figures offer a practical view of the U.S. market, from the value of imported gems to the smaller but meaningful role of domestic production.

Each statistic below is drawn from the U.S. Geological Survey’s 2026 Mineral Commodity Summaries, Gemstones chapter. The report was published in February 2026 and uses 2025 estimates.

$11 billion

U.S. gemstone imports in 2025

The U.S. Geological Survey estimated that gemstones imported for consumption were worth about $11 billion in 2025, down from $19.6 billion in 2024.

69 million carats

Estimated global gem-quality natural diamond production

Worldwide gem-quality natural diamond mine production was estimated at 69 million carats in 2025. Russia produced about 30% of the total by volume.

How to use these figures.

This page summarizes the U.S. Geological Survey’s gemstone estimates rather than creating new estimates. Dollar figures are reported in U.S. dollars, and diamond production is reported in carats. “Apparent consumption” follows the U.S. Geological Survey definition: production plus imports minus exports.

The source is refreshed annually. Individual figures can change when the U.S. Geological Survey revises historical data or releases new estimates.
